Are you curious about eyelash extensions and what exactly they entail? Read on to find out more about the various kinds of extensions and the process that comes along with them.
What Are Eyelash Extensions?
Eyelash extensions are small strands of hair that can be attached to your natural eyelashes in order to achieve a bold and dramatic look while also making your lashes appear fuller. The small fibers used to create false lashes are often made with either faux mink or another kind of synthetic lash material.
They are applied with a semi-permanent waterproof bonding agent or glue. Most lash extensions can last several weeks with proper maintenance.
Temporary false eyelashes are meant to be removed after each use. These falsies are pre-designed, meaning they are not necessarily intended for the unique shape of your eye. However, eyelash extensions can be designed to fit your specific eye shape.
Different Types of Eyelash Extensions
Interested in learning about the various types of lash extensions available in the eye makeup world? Well, read on to find out more about these different styles that each provide a different quality to your overall lash look!
Classic Eyelash Extensions
Classic eyelash extensions are one of the most popular eyelash extension types because they’re just what their name entails — classic!
These extensions will add a subtle touch of drama to your natural look, giving your eye area a full look without going overboard on the glam. They are applied by attaching one strand to each of your individual lashes with the help of lash glue.
Volume Eyelash Extensions
Volume eyelash extensions are the next step up from classic lash extensions. They add more glamor by giving your lashes more volume and length, as well as making them appear more fanned out. These extensions are applied by attaching three lash strands to each of your natural lashes.
Mega Volume Eyelash Extensions
Believe it or not, mega-volume eyelash extensions offer even more boldness! These fake eyelashes come in a variety of diameters: 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6. This kind of style will take the thickness factor of your lash extensions to the next level!
Wispy Eyelash Extensions
Wispy eyelash extensions are a hybrid style. They consist of eyelashes of varying lengths that ultimately create a feathered and fluffy look. Fun fact: this style of extensions was inspired by celebrity Kim Kardashian!
There are also many different wispy and fluttery lash extension styles, which include a combination of the styles mentioned above. For example, there are wispy volume lashes, wispy classic lashes, wispy hybrid lashes, and mega volume lashes.
What About DIY Eyelash Extensions?
Did you know that Lashify is the inventor of DIY lash extensions? Thanks to the innovative eye of NYC-based lash expert Sahara Lotti, the method of applying false eyelashes on yourself became a reality — and it’s way easier than you might think.
You can very well go to a salon to have a professional lash tech place them on for you, but this just might take you a lot more time, effort, and money. Before you take that leap, there are some things worth knowing that could definitely help you — and your lashes — in the long run!
What Else Should You Know About Lash Extensions?
Keeping Your Natural Lashes Healthy
When you have natural lashes that are strong and healthy, your extension set will hold and look better. That means taking off your makeup every single night — yes, even if you get home at 3 a.m. Proper care of your lashes can help support the growth cycle of hair follicles, skin, and nails and can help lash health as well.
How Much Do Lash Extensions Cost?
If you want to dive into the glamorous world of eyelash extensions, that’s great! Just know that, unfortunately, it won’t come cheap. Most extension sets that are applied by a professional in a salon can range from $100 to $300, depending on what kind of set you get. The price can also be influenced by how many refills you get on a monthly basis.
Please also keep in mind that as you wear your lash extensions, some will naturally fall out. This means it’s time for a fill. Fills will add to the extra cost of extension sets overall, but they’re needed to ensure that your strip lash set stays looking fresh and fabulous for its entire duration.
Research Your Lashes First
One of the most important things before venturing out to get a new lash extension set is to make sure you do your research, and thoroughly! Make sure to vet any potential lash salons you may want to go to — this includes making sure the lash artist is licensed and checking out any public reviews that are posted on their behalf.
You may even want to call the artist ahead to inquire about what kind of glue they use, so you can avoid ingredients that may irritate your eyes or cause allergic reactions. You may also want to perform a patch test beforehand to determine whether lash glue causes skin issues for you.

Are you in the mood to be daring and try applying eyelash extensions yourself? Lashify’s got the tips you need to get started off right! Check out our complete tutorials on how to apply false eyelashes if you are a beginner.
The Lashify Application Method
First, you’ll need a Control Kit™. This is a perfectly crafted kit that consists of all the accessories and products you’ll need for the application of a full set of lashes.
Start by practicing how you will hold your Fuse Control™ Wand. That way, you can get a feel for what is comfortable for you before you begin.
Next, prep your lashes. This is essential to get rid of any oil, dirt, or makeup, which helps with the application process and ensures that your lash extensions last longer. We suggest either using the Pre-Cleanse Cleansing Water or just washing your face. (Just a warning, do not use witch hazel or micellar cleansing water.) Then, let your lashes dry.
After that, you’ll apply the Whisper Light™ Dual-Sided Bond. Not too much is needed — use a spoolie to brush out any clumps. Then, use either our Blow-Speed Dryer or your hand to dry your lashes. Wait again for your lashes to dry fully.
Next, use the back of your finger to slide across your lashes to make sure the bond has begun to stick. Once it has, the next layer of application can commence.
The Second Layer of Applying Gossamers®
For the second layer of the application, we recommend our Clear Whisper Light Bond for beginners. If you decide to do this second layer, you should apply 1mm to 2mm above your waterline and then allow the bond to dry. You’ll know you’re ready to apply the lashes when the bond turns clear.
Finally, you can begin to apply your lashes.
First, lift the lashes from the cartridge that they come in. Then, pick the lashes up using your Fuse Control Wand — and try to get as close to the tip as possible. As a beginner, you may want to start the application from either the middle or the outer corner of your lashes.
After deciding where you’ll start, hold the lash so that it meets the curve of your eye. Look down into the mirror inside your Control Kit and then carefully place the spine onto the bond line.
Try to look underneath your lash, scoop the Gossamer® lash under, and then slightly pull back.
This process will make sure that the spine is secure to your natural lash. Try your best to have a steady hand when applying your lashes. It helps to either put your elbow down on the table or place your ring finger about an inch below your lower lashes.
Finishing Steps for Stunning Lashes
Make sure the spine of the lashes is placed 1mm to 2 mm above your waterline. This is so that your eyes will be comfortable and your lashes will last as long as possible.
And there you have it; once you’ve successfully completed all these steps, you’ll have officially applied your first lash extension set the Lashify way. We recommend you try Lashify’s lash extensions because they were specially designed to emulate your natural lashes!
Lash Extension Aftercare
Naturally, as with any beauty service, there are certain precautions you should undergo to make sure your lash extensions last for as long as they possibly can! Whether you decide to go to a lash technician or apply them yourself, here are some tips you should certainly follow:
- Avoid touching your extensions
- Avoid oil-based serums and creams
- Avoid getting your lash extensions wet for at least 48 hours
- Do not use mascara on your extensions, and skip the eyelash curler
- Sleep with a silk or satin pillowcase
- Use oil-free makeup remover or cleanser
One More Key Lash Takeaway
You’re probably wondering if eyelash extensions will cause any sort of damage to your natural lashes, and the answer is no! The only way natural lashes can end up damaged is from improper or lash application. Once again, as long as you do your research and find a reputable lash tech, this shouldn't be a worry!
The bottom line is, eyelash extensions can be an awesome way to add any level of eye-catching drama to your face. Whether you want a subtle flirty look or full volume glamor, eyelash extensions give you that variety.
