What’s My Eye Shape?
You probably haven’t considered your eye shape, or whether or not it even matters, unless you’ve tried a new eye makeup look and realized it didn’t actually work for your particular eye shape. It can be incredibly frustrating to try different makeup tips only to find that the actual shape of your eye won’t allow you to get the same result you see in the tutorial.
Thankfully, different eye looks are available for every different eye shape. At Lashify®, we specialize in helping you identify your eye shape and learn how to style your eyes like a makeup artist. From eyeshadow primer to liner, knowing your eye shape can help you get looks that work best for your eyes.
So if you’re asking yourself, “What eye shape do I have,” follow along as we detail the 10 eye shapes and learn how to identify your own.
10 Most Common Eye Shapes
It’s more than just eye shapes. Your eye shape and eye look are also affected by the position of your eyeball inside your eye socket.
You may find that you have a combination of several shapes, which can help you better scout out makeup and lash looks that work best for you. To find your eye shape, all you need is a mirror and this helpful guide.
Looking in the mirror, consider the following features of your eyes:
- The overall shape of the eye. Look at the entire perimeter of your eye. Is it more round or slanted?
- The position of the outer corners of your eyes. Does the outer corner of the eye turn upward toward your brow bone or angle downward toward your cheek?
- Your upper eyelid. How much available space is there on your upper eyelid? Can you see a lot of your lid or only a small portion? Is there a visible crease in your eyelid, or is your eyelid smooth?
Now that you’ve taken a good look at your eyes, read on to determine what types of eye shapes are most common and which are most like your own eyes.
1. Almond-Shaped Eyes
Eyes that are wide in the middle and taper toward the inner and outer corners are almond-shaped. People with an almond eye shape have irises that meet the top of their upper lids and lower lids, so the whites of the eyes are not visible at the top or bottom of the iris when looking straight ahead.
Almond eyes are thought to be the most common eye shape, but you’ll find slight variations of this shape that can make almond-shaped eyes appear very different. It’s also possible to have a combination of eye shapes. For instance, you might have almond eyes that are also wide-set.
Keep that in mind as we move into the next nine shapes.
2. Round Eye Shape
Round eyes are, as you might suspect, shaped more like a soccer ball than a football. Round eyes are as wide as they are tall, and typically, the white of your eyes is visible around the entire eyeball.
Round eyes, like almond eyes, may have other eye shape features, so it’s important to consider the other aspects of your eyes before determining that they are only round, not round and hooded, or round and upturned, etc.
3. Hooded Eyes
Having hooded eyes refers to the shape of the person’s eyelid. If you have hooded eyes, your eyelids will be barely visible when you look directly into the mirror. This means your brow bone is positioned slightly lower and more prominently over your eyes, or there is an additional fold of skin underneath the brown bone that masks the remainder of your eyelid.
Aging eyes often develop lids that “droop,” so it is possible to develop hooded eyes over time, although some people are born with them. Even if you don’t have a lot of eyelid real estate, there are still ways to get great makeup and lash looks using tricks and techniques to make your eyelids appear more visible than they are.
4. Downturned Eyes
Looking at your eyes, focus on the outer corners. Do the outer corners of your eyes tilt downward toward your cheekbones? If so, you likely have downturned eyes.
It’s very possible to have a certain eye shape, like almond eyes or round eyes, that are also downturned. Downturned eyes often look kind and compassionate and are nicknamed “puppy dog” eyes.
5. Upturned Eyes
When inspecting those outer corners, you may have noticed that they turn slightly upward toward your temples. If so, you have upturned eyes. Like the downturned eye shape, it’s possible to have a specific eye shape with the additional characteristic of being upturned.
If you have upturned almond-shaped eyes, for instance, you have cat eyes. Cat eyes are almond in shape and turned slightly upward, similar to a feline’s.
6. Monolid Eyes
If you are of Asian descent, you are more likely to have monolid eyes. Monolid eyes refer to the appearance of the upper eyelid. Unlike the hooded eye, monolid eye shapes have plenty of visible eyelid space. The eyelid itself, however, does not have a visible crease and is instead smooth.
Monolid eye shapes are perfect for trying numerous colors of shadow and playing with eyeliner techniques. The one caveat is that you’ll need to learn to “fake” a crease in your lid. In addition, you may also need to pay close attention to your lash choices.
Both the upper lash line and lower lash line of monolid eyes may turn inward or downward, making it more of a challenge to apply mascara. Don’t worry; Lashify has you covered with the best false eyelashes for monolid eyes.
7. Deep-Set Eyes
We’ve covered some basic eye shapes and considered how your eyelids look. Now, let’s look at the position of your eyes on your face.
Deep-set eyes are eyes that appear to recede into the skull. These eyes sit further back in the eye socket, behind the brow bone. They’re often referred to as sultry, seductive, or “come hither” eyes.
If you have deep-set eyes, you may find it hard to make your lashes look as visible as you want them to be. Because of the position of the brow bone, it may be best to focus on volume and less on length to keep your lashes comfortable.
One benefit of using the Lashify DIY Lash Extension™ System is that it uses underlash technology. This means your Lashify Gossamer® lashes are placed underneath your natural lashes, close to your waterline.
This is especially helpful for people with deep-set eyes because it makes them more comfortable against the brow bone.
8. Close-Set Eyes
The bridge of your nose separates your eyes, but some people have eyes that are set closer to the bridge of the nose than others. This makes the bridge of the nose naturally slimmer and makes the eyes less than an eyeball’s width apart from one another.
9. Wide-Set Eyes
Alternatively, if you have eyes that are further apart than an eyeball’s length, your eyes are likely wide set. People with wide-set eyes have a wider bridge and more space between their eyebrows.
10. Protruding Eyes
The opposite of deep-set eyes are protruding eyes. These types of eyes appear to “pop” from the eye sockets and are usually more prominent than a person’s brow bone. People with protruding eyes may have eyes that are naturally more open-looking and alert.
As you’ve probably discovered, your eye shape is more complicated than simply the outline of your eye. Like determining your face shape, many factors give your eyes their shape and help you determine the best way to style your lids and lashes.
Now that you know what shapes best fit your eyes, you’re ready for tutorials galore. From the perfect winged eyeliner hacks to shadow techniques to match your eye color and shape, you’re at the beginning of an eye styling journey that will make your eyes the most prominent feature on your face.
A great way to style your eyes without adding additional makeup is by focusing on your lash style. Lucky for you, the Lashify System features Gossamer lashes for every eye shape, preference, and occasion.
Common Eye Shape Misconceptions
There are a lot of myths floating around about eye shapes that might leave you feeling unsure. Let’s clear up some of the most common misconceptions:
- All Hooded Eyes Look the Same: False! Hooded eyes can vary in shape and size. Some may have a slight fold, while others might have a more prominent hood.
- Round Eyes Are Always Large: Not necessarily. Some people with round eyes also have small eyes. The key is in the symmetry, not the size.
- Monolid Eyes Have No Shape: Absolutely untrue! Monolid eyes have plenty of shape and versatility when it comes to styling. You just need the right techniques.
Don’t let these misconceptions throw you off! Eye shapes are unique and diverse, and knowing yours will only help you embrace your natural beauty.
Why Does Eye Shape Matter for Lashes and Makeup?
Before diving deeper into different eye shapes, it’s important to understand why they matter when it comes to your makeup and lash game.
- Enhances Natural Features: Knowing your eye shape allows you to choose the right techniques and products that flatter your natural features, from eyeshadow placement to choosing the perfect lash style.
- Makes Application Easier: Whether you're working with eyeshadow, eyeliner, or lashes, understanding your eye shape helps you avoid common application frustrations and achieve the look you’re aiming for.
- Boosts Confidence: When your makeup complements your eye shape, you’ll notice how it elevates your look, making you feel more confident and ready to take on the world.
Once you’ve identified your eye shape, your makeup and lash styling will feel much more intuitive, and the results? Stunning.
The next step is choosing the right lashes for different eye shapes. This will take your look from basic to breathtaking.
Lashify Your Eyes
Looking for the best eyelash extensions? If you’ve tried at-home lashes before and felt like they didn’t do the trick, that’s understandable. No other DIY lashes are made like Lashify. Our Gossamer lashes are different in some really important ways.
Our Gossamer Lashes
Our lashes are 100% cruelty-free and designed to feel and wear like mink lashes. They’re made from Korean PBT silk and are attached to a weightless spine that feels comfortable against your water line. Each Gossamer lash features multiple lash fibers and is best described as a hybrid combination of a strip lash and lash cluster.
Our Bonds
We don’t use lash glue to attach our Gossamer lashes to your natural lashes. Instead, we use Bonds. Bonds are made like lash serums and feature biotin and lavender to support natural lash health while wearing your Gossamer lashes.
Bonds never fully harden, which prevents your natural lashes from becoming brittle and breaking. Bonds allow your Gossamers to bend and move naturally with your lashes, keeping them (and your Gossamer lashes) safe.
Our Application
Unlike other DIY lashes, Gossamer lashes are designed to be worn underneath your natural lashes, close to the waterline. This helps distribute weight evenly, keeps them comfortable, and is a more forgiving way of applying your lashes, especially for beginners.
Gossamer lashes can be worn for up to 10 days with proper care and can be worn and re-worn multiple times.
It’s easy to get started with Lashify. You just need to get your hands on the Lashify Control Kit.
Be In Control
The Lashify Control Kit is the easiest way to get the lash looks you love. It comes with everything you need to get started with the Lashify system.
Each kit contains:
- Two sets of Gossamer lashes. Pick from our Curl, Amplify, or Bold collections to begin curating your own lash wardrobe.
- Fuse Control® Wand. Our Wand is the only tool you’ll ever need to apply your Gossamer lashes. For smaller hands and faces, the Petit Curve Wand is the best option. The Birdie® is our travel-sized wand that makes application on the go possible.
- One set of Wandoms®. Don’t be a fool, protect your tool. Your Fuse Control Wand gets the glove for more love with Wandoms. Wandoms protect the ends of the Fuse Control Wand so that your Gossamer lashes don’t stick to the ends during application. Wandoms are reusable several times and are essential for mess-free Gossamer application.
- Whisper Light Bond™. Our most popular bond, this dual-sided adhesive has a black end and a clear end. This dual-sided bond is perfect for application and touch-ups, and it never leaves behind a sticky residue.
- Water Poof - The perfect sealer for getting long wear out of your lashes. You don’t have to seal your Gossamers, but if you do, WaterPoof is a great solution.
- Samples. You’ll get a sample of Pre Cleanse and Melt Away in each Control Kit. Pre Cleanse is our Japanese Cleansing Water that helps remove dirt and oil from your lashes and lids. It’s powerful yet gentle enough to be used as an all-over facial cleanser. Melt Away is our dual-phase, oil-based makeup remover that helps you easily slide your Gossamer lashes off of your natural lashes without damaging them.
Everything comes wrapped up in a protective hard case with a mirror to help you apply your lashes like a pro.
