Makeup Tips for Rectangle Face Shape

Makeup Tips for Rectangle Face ShapeLashify

You’re probably very familiar with your sign, but what do you know about your shape (your face shape and bone structure, that is)? Whether you’re a Pisces with a heart-shaped face or an oval face shape Libra, knowing a little about the shape of your face can help you accentuate the features you want and even sculpt your skin’s appearance.

Rectangular face shape beauties should know it is so hip to be square. Your elongated square face shape gives you plenty of symmetry and an even landscape to try out new makeup trends. We’ll show you how the beauty editors at Lashify® help soften your angular features with clever makeup tricks and lash extensions.

If you find yourself reading and wondering, “What’s my face shape?” that's no problem. Take a peek at our blog to find out about the different face shapes and whether you are a diamond face shape, square, heart, rectangle, round face shape, or rectangle.

According to experts, there are nine face shapes in all, and you’ll find a match for yours among them. If you already know you’re a rectangle shape, read on to learn which makeup tips and tricks work best to highlight your favorite facial features with these makeup looks.

Rectangle Face Shape Basics

If you have a rectangle face, you have an oblong face with angled edges. This means the length of your face will be longer than it is wider but angled at the forehead and jawline, resembling a rectangle. You may have a particularly high forehead, high cheekbones, and a very structured jawline that does not taper at the chin.

People with rectangle face shapes, like Jennifer Lopez, can use makeup to highlight cheekbones, round out the forehead, and soften the chin. The best part is that you don’t have to be a makeup artist to get the job done.

We’ll show you how to soften your angles while still maintaining the structure and sculpt that makes your face so iconic.

5 Makeup Tips for Rectangle Face Shapes

Keep in mind that a rectangle face is usually a long face with angled edges. The goal of makeup will be to keep the structure while softening the edges. You can do that with contouring, blush application, highlighting, and even eye makeup.

1. Blush Away

If you aren’t using blush, what are you waiting for? Blush gives your face a natural flush that looks youthful and vibrant and, if placed correctly, can lift the skin and sculpt the cheekbones. If you already have prominent cheekbones, blush will help accentuate them and draw attention to the midface.

To apply blush to a rectangle face shape, the goal will be to add width while keeping the cheeks soft. To do this, use your eyes as a guide and apply your blush directly beneath your pupils, on the apples of your cheeks, sweeping color outward toward your temple but stopping the application just below the outer edge of your eye.

Avoid applying blush to the center of the forehead and chin, which can make you look too flushed, and never put it directly on your nose or extremely close to your nose, which can make you look sick. Focus on the apples of the cheeks, and you’ll be golden.

2. Contour

Contouring can create shadows that help parts of your face recede while highlighting others. We use contouring methods to sculpt the skin and give the illusion of a slimmer nose, a more prominent or less prominent jaw, and a less angular forehead.

Instead of using numerous different colors and attempting to contour your entire face, you can keep it simple by using either a light-colored bronzer or a concealer stick that is one shade darker than your natural skin tone. Apply your contour in a universally flattering pattern known as the “3” makeup technique.

Starting at your hairline just above the middle of each eye, trace your hairline down to the temple, across and beneath the cheekbone, and back out and down along the jawline. Keep the contour light through the cheeks and heavier on the forehead and jawline. This will help create a softer, more oblong face shape with softer angles.

3. Highlight

Next, you’ll draw attention to the midface, which can help draw attention away from the angled edges of your face. Using a highlighter, highlight the middle of your forehead, the bridge of your nose, and your chin.

If you have less prominent cheekbones, you can highlight them also. If you have prominent cheekbones already, keep your highlighter on the center of your face to draw attention to this area and soften the cheek area.

Look for a shimmery highlighter that contains light reflective ingredients instead of ones that contain glitter, which can give your look an instant early 2000s club feel.

4. Play Up the Eyes

One way to soften those sharp angles is by playing up your eye makeup with soft, smokey looks. There’s always a time for bold glamor, but for day-to-day, keep your eye makeup simple and feminine. Think of chocolate neutrals, petal pinks, and smoke grays with minimal liner and flirty, voluminous lashes.

Don’t worry; if you haven’t been gifted with doe-like lashes, you can fake the look with the Lashify DIY Lash Extension™ System. In about 20 minutes (30 if you’re a beginner), you can give yourself the look of salon-quality lashes that are comfortable and safe for your natural lashes.

5. Lash Extensions

Absolutely nothing will soften the aspects of a rectangular face (like a strong jawline and wider forehead) than soft, fluffy lash extensions. They immediately draw attention to the eye area, look feminine and flirty, and help fill space on larger facial landscapes.

We love Lashify Fluffy Gossamer® lashes and Fluffy FX. These lashes are designed to give you a multidimensional, voluminous look that is lightweight and natural looking. These lashes are great worn alone or stacked and used as part of a Lash Map combination.

If you aren’t using the Lashify system, now is the time to get started. Everything about Lashify is different from other at-home lash systems you may have tried.

The Lashify Life

Our system is built differently, and that’s on purpose. Lashify was founded to fill a gap in the marketplace, giving you access to salon-quality lashes you could do at home.

Our Gossamer Lashes

Our 100% Korean PBT silk lashes are mink-like and cruelty-free. They are designed like a cross between a strip lash and cluster lash, with each Gossamer containing multiple lash extensions attached to one featherlight Spine base that measures just a few millimeters in length.

Gossamer lashes are adhered to your natural lashes using Underlash Technology™. This means your Gossamers will be attached beneath your natural lashes, close to your waterline. If you don’t get your Gossamer placed exactly where you wanted it, this method of application is very forgiving, and it will likely be unnoticeable. Underlash Technology also makes your lashes more comfortable while you are wearing them.

Our Bonds

We don’t use lash glue to attach our Gossamer lashes. Lash glue (even the ones used in the salon) contains chemicals like formaldehyde and cyanoacrylate, the same ingredients found in superglue. Instead, our Bonds contain biotin and lavender to help support your natural lashes while you wear your Gossamer lash extensions.

Our Bonds also feature Microflex™, which allows them to hold your Gossamer lashes in place without fully curing or hardening. When lash glue hardens, it can cause your natural lashes to become brittle, which can result in breakage. Microflex allows your Gossamer lashes to bend and move with your natural lashes to protect your lashes and your extensions.

The Control Kit

Everything you need to get started with Lashify can be found in the Lashify Control Kit™. Each kit comes with the tools you need wrapped up in a sturdy, protective case so all your lash supplies are in one spot.

Each kit contains:

  • Two sets of Gossamer lashes. Pick two from our Curl, Amplify, or Bold collections.
  • Fuse Control® Wand. Available in two sizes so you always feel comfortable applying your Gossamer lashes.
  • One set of Wandoms®. Bonds become tacky during application. Wandoms prevent your Gossamer lashes from sticking to your Fuse Control Wand.
  • Whisper Light Bond™. Our most popular bond, this dual-sided adhesive has a black end and a clear end. This dual-sided bond is perfect for application and for touch-ups, and it never leaves behind a sticky residue.
  • Glass Finishing Coat. The perfect sealer for getting long wear out of your lashes. You don’t have to seal your Gossamers, but if you do, Glass is a great solution.
  • Samples. You’ll get a sample of Pre Cleanse and Melt Away in each Control Kit. If you love them, come back to the website to stock up on the full-size versions.

Your Control Kit is your key to making the most of all your angles and styling your lashes like a pro.
